Motorbike chain: warning signs

Motorbike chain: warning signs

Depending on use, riding conditions and maintenance, your motorbike chain kit will need to be replaced after a few thousand kilometres to +-30,000 km (for the smoothest and quietest rides); specifically for your motorbike or quad chain, there are certain warning signs that will require you to either clean and maintain your motorbike chain directly or replace it:

Dirt and debris on the motorbike chain

A motorbike chain that is not cleaned often will accumulate a lot of debris and dirt that will greatly reduce the life of the chain. So don't let deposits build up! Do not hesitate to consult our blog article "Maintenance".

Rust on the motorbike chain

A motorbike chain showing signs of rust is also an indication of poor maintenance; rust prevents normal movement of the chain and reduces its life. Clean and lubricate the chain immediately!

Chain elongation

If the motorbike chain can be pulled away from the sprocket, this is a sign of elongation; elongation occurs as chains age and the inner pins wear out: the chain must be replaced quickly.

Hard spot(s) on the motorbike chain

As they age, some links become stiff and bend. This can happen when there is not enough or no grease between the pin and the bush. Replace your motorbike chain as soon as possible!

When the top and bottom outer plates show worn flats, replace the chain as soon as possible (flats indicate metal wear and reduced chain strength)

Rotated pin(s) on motorbike chain

Rotated pins are a sign of wear on the pins and rollers of your motorbike chain. If any pins have turned with the tips up, replace your chain immediately!

Damaged or missing seals

The use of inappropriate chemicals/cleaning tools can damage the joints of the motorbike chain. Its life span will be reduced: replace your chain without delay!

Cracks in the motorbike chain

Cracks can be caused by time or by too much load. If you find cracks in your motorbike chain, replace it immediately (continuing to ride with a cracked chain can be dangerous!).
